A broken dream. You could see it on the face of David Beckham as he left the San Siro pitch on Sunday evening, fighting back the tears after the sudden snap of his Achilles tendon. With a lengthy spell on the sidelines duly confirmed, Beckham’s hope of closing his international career by appearing at his fourth FIFA World Cup™ finals has been shattered.
The England midfielder’s misfortune, which spells another setback for his coach Fabio Capello, and will deny South African spectators the chance of seeing one of world football’s biggest names in June, is a familiar tale. Just as each world finals produces heroes, so it also gives us hard-luck stories of players cruelly denied an opportunity to shine on the greatest stage.
England fans, who have also seen Michael Owen’s faint prospects of claiming a place at South Africa 2010 scuppered by injury, are no strangers to nervously scanning medical bulletins in FIFA World Cup years. 2006 brought the saga of Wayne Rooney’s metatarsal, while in 2002 it was Beckham’s. Both were eventually passed fit to play though in 2002 coach Sven-Goran Eriksson did miss the injured Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville.

Klinsmann: Germany can win it

Jurgen Klinsmann has tipped Germany for glory at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, and claimed the insecurity over the future of current coach Joachim Low, his successor, will not affect the players.Speaking in the Bild newspaper, the 45-year-old talked up his country's chances of success, despite witnessing their 1-0 defeat by Argentina last week.

"We can still win it," Klinsmann said. "I think the Germany team is one of the favourites, together with several others, including Argentina. However, the top candidate for me is Spain."

Lippi: We're in it to win it

Among the many national coaches attending the recent FIFA Team Workshop in Sun City was Italy supremo Marcello Lippi. Impeccably dressed as always and with not a hair out of place, the former Juventus boss was his usual affable self at the gathering, blending sharp observations with a sprinkling of humorous asides.
“That’s what we’re coming here to do in June: to win and take the Trophy home with us again. I’m not worried about any of our rivals,” he continues. “If we can apply everything we know out on the pitch, then we’ll have the chance to show what we’re capable of and go on and win the competition again.”

CTRUS is the first intelligent soccer ball – the solution to a lot of soccer scandals. Alberto Villarreal and Michael Rojkind (it’s creators) announced in Spain that the new ball could be used in soccer games 2 years from now:

We believe that this ball can add a lot of fair-play to the future soccer games. There are a lot of things that need improvement in soccer and the ball could help a lot. The intelligent ball can be used in 1-2 years, but it depends on the authorities and their decision to use it.

Germany's Khedira could miss finals

Stuttgart and Germany midfielder Sami Khedira could miss June's 2010 FIFA World Cup™ finals in South Africa after damaging knee ligaments during Saturday's 2-1 win at Bayern Munich.
The 22-year-old was injured tackling Germany team-mate Miroslav Klose in the first-half and is expected to miss the whole of April, but he should not need an operation. Bayern's defeat in Munich saw them lose top place in the Bundesliga to Schalke 04 who beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 also on Saturday with two goals from ex-Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi.
Stuttgart's medical staff say Khedira should be back for their last two Bundesliga matches before the season ends on May 9, with Germany coach Joachim Loew set to announce his World Cup squad the week before.
Khedira has won two caps for Germany and came on as a second-half substitute in this month's 1-0 defeat by Argentina in a friendly.
He is the second German player to announce he is in danger of missing the FIFA World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 11. Hamburg's Marcell Jansen revealed he has an ankle injury which could also keep him out of the tournament.
Germany, who finished third as hosts of the 2006 World Cup, have drawn Africa Cup of Nations finalists Ghana, Australia and Serbia in Group D. They begin their campaign against Australia on 13 June in Durban.
